Baker's Late Burst Gives Hampshire Edge in 17-Wicket Cardiff Day

Hampshire gained the edge over Glamorgan after 17 wickets fell on the opening day of their County Championship match at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. BBC Sport reported that the visitors were dismissed for 162 in 40.2 overs before reducing Glamorgan to 111-7 from 38 overs, leaving the home side 51 runs behind when bad light stopped play with 15 overs unused.

Jake Lehmann held Hampshire's first innings together with an unbeaten 51 after Nick Gubbins and Toby Albert fell early. Ali Orr made 35, but the visitors struggled to build partnerships as Zain Ul Hassan took 3-33 and Pakistan seamer Mir Hamza returned 3-39. Timm van der Gugten and Dan Douthwaite also contributed wickets, while Kyle Abbott's forceful 16 was the only other Hampshire score in double figures.

The total soon looked more competitive when Eddie Jack struck twice in his opening over. Asa Tribe and Glamorgan captain Kiran Carlson were both caught at third slip by Lehmann without scoring. Abbott then trapped Ul Hassan leg before wicket, leaving Glamorgan in severe trouble at 2-3.

Ben Kellaway and Colin Ingram responded with a 65-run fourth-wicket partnership. Ingram made 32 before Abbott had him given leg before wicket, and the veteran South African then bowled Sean Dickson. Kellaway continued to score freely, hitting eight fours in a 57 that made him the highest scorer on a demanding day for batters.

England paceman Sonny Baker delivered the decisive late burst after being released from the Test squad at Lord's and joining Hampshire during the match. He entered the attack with Glamorgan 97-5 and bowled Chris Cooke with his third delivery. Three balls later, Kellaway was caught behind, giving Baker figures of 2-3 from his first over and sharply changing the balance of the contest.

According to the BBC report, overcast and humid conditions helped the seamers throughout a day interrupted by bad light. Glamorgan collected three points and Hampshire two, but the immediate contest remained finely placed: Hampshire still needed three wickets to secure a first-innings advantage, while Glamorgan required another 52 runs to move ahead. The forecast also left uncertainty over how much play would be possible on day two.
