Bairstow seals Yorkshire one-wicket win over Nottinghamshire with a six

Jonny Bairstow hit the winning six as Yorkshire beat Nottinghamshire by one wicket at Trent Bridge to finish their County Championship campaign with a third successive victory. The captain made an unbeaten 38, with Yorkshire reaching 159-9 in pursuit of 158, according to BBC Sport's match report.

The narrow finish followed a first-innings recovery that had kept Yorkshire competitive. The club's report from the second day described how George Hill made 58 from 57 balls after the visitors had slipped to 124-8 in reply to Nottinghamshire's 251. Yorkshire eventually reached 179, limiting the deficit to 72 despite an innings in which their top order had struggled against the home attack.

Olly Stone was central to Nottinghamshire's position, taking 5-51 from 17 overs in that first innings. Yorkshire's report said he left the field immediately after claiming his fifth wicket and was replaced by Tom Giles because of a hamstring injury. His removal meant Nottinghamshire went into the remainder of the match without the bowler who had done most to establish their initial advantage.

Yorkshire had also made important inroads with the ball before the final day's decisive collapse. Nottinghamshire were reduced to 9-2 in their second innings and closed the second day on 55-3, still leading by 127. Hill claimed the third wicket, his 48th of the Championship season, while Bairstow took a one-handed catch off Coad to dismiss Ben Slater, Yorkshire's account reported.

Yorkshire had created that opportunity by dismissing Nottinghamshire for 85. Jack White took 5-23 and Ben Coad 4-27 as the hosts lost their final seven wickets for 30 runs. White claimed four wickets during the morning, turning an overnight advantage for Nottinghamshire into a reachable target.

Will Luxton contributed 53 to the chase, but Liam Patterson-White's 4-38 and Mohammad Ali's 3-72 kept the result in doubt. Seven Yorkshire wickets fell for 61 before Bairstow struck Ali over cover to settle the contest. Yorkshire finished fifth in Division One, one place behind Nottinghamshire.
