Lakers Complete Blockbuster Trade for All-Star Guard Ahead of Playoff Push
Los Angeles Lakers acquire veteran All-Star guard in multi-team trade, reshaping their roster for a championship run.

The Los Angeles Lakers have pulled off one of the most significant trades of the 2026 NBA season, acquiring All-Star guard Marcus Johnson from the Portland Trail Blazers in a complex three-team deal that also involves the Miami Heat. The trade, completed just hours before the February 18th deadline, sends shockwaves through the Western Conference playoff race.

In the deal, the Lakers send promising young forward Tyler Chen, veteran center Robert Williams, and two future first-round picks to Portland, while Miami receives backup point guard Alex Rodriguez and a protected second-round pick. Johnson, averaging 22.4 points and 7.8 assists per game this season, brings elite playmaking and clutch scoring to a Lakers team currently sitting sixth in the Western Conference.

Lakers General Manager Sarah Martinez expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition during a hastily arranged press conference. "Marcus is exactly the type of proven winner we needed to complement LeBron and Anthony," Martinez stated. "His playoff experience and leadership will be invaluable as we make our championship push."

The 29-year-old Johnson has been Portland's leading scorer for three consecutive seasons and brings valuable postseason experience, having helped lead the Trail Blazers to the Western Conference Finals in 2024. His ability to create shots for teammates and score in crucial moments addresses the Lakers' most pressing need heading into the final stretch of the regular season.

Portland's decision to trade Johnson signals a shift toward rebuilding around their young core. Trail Blazers President of Basketball Operations David Kim noted that acquiring Chen, a promising 22-year-old forward, along with future draft assets, positions the franchise for long-term success. "This trade allows us to build around our developing talent while maintaining flexibility for the future," Kim explained.

The Lakers' championship window remains open with LeBron James continuing to play at an elite level in his 23rd NBA season. Adding Johnson's scoring punch and playoff experience could be the difference-maker in what promises to be a highly competitive Western Conference playoff race. The trade also provides the Lakers with much-needed depth in their backcourt rotation.
