Domingo calls for Hampshire squad changes as relegation threat deepens

Hampshire head coach Russell Domingo has called for changes to his squad after defeat by Nottinghamshire left the county facing an increasingly difficult fight to remain in County Championship Division One. Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, Domingo acknowledged that survival would now require an exceptional turnaround and said recruitment would be needed to address weaknesses in the team.

According to BBC Sport's report on Friday, Hampshire are bottom of the table and 32 points from safety, with only matches against Leicestershire and Sussex remaining. Their Championship record stands at two victories, seven defeats and three draws. Domingo said the immediate aim was to improve their cricket and finish the campaign well, while recognising how serious their position had become.

The latest defeat came despite a strong second-innings bowling performance against the reigning champions. Nottinghamshire made 377 in their first innings and Hampshire replied with 304. The visitors then dismissed Nottinghamshire for 104, with debutant Manny Lumsden taking five wickets. That recovery gave Hampshire a target of 178, but they were bowled out for 123 and could not convert the opportunity into a win.

Domingo said Hampshire needed to strengthen specific areas after a second successive season spent confronting relegation. He noted that the county had escaped the drop last year but considered it highly likely this time. Relegation has not been confirmed, and his comments about next season were conditional on Hampshire falling into Division Two. He nevertheless stressed that the squad was not currently good enough.

Looking beyond the remaining fixtures, Domingo identified targeted recruitment and learning to win again as priorities. He said Hampshire should seek positives while developing a side capable of competing in the top division within a couple of seasons. His assessment followed both the failed run chase and the wider difficulties that have left the county at the foot of the standings.

Domingo succeeded Adi Birrell after his fellow South African left at the end of last season. His first summer has also included a run to the T20 final with Hampshire Hawks. They reached Finals Day at Edgbaston before losing the trophy match to Northamptonshire Steelbacks by 14 runs.
