Verstappen Contract Drama: Why the F1 Driver Market Revolves Around Him
With performance clauses in his Red Bull deal, Max Verstappen could be a free agent this summer. Here is why the entire driver market is on hold waiting for his decision.

The Formula 1 driver market is essentially frozen, and everyone is watching one man: Max Verstappen.

The four-time world champion has a contract with Red Bull that runs through 2028, but sources close to the situation say it contains performance clauses that could set him free if he falls below a certain championship position by mid-season. Given Red Bull is currently struggling, those clauses could be triggered as early as the summer break.

Verstappen has already signaled he is considering options outside F1. In Japan, he confirmed he was weighing the possibility of leaving the sport entirely and racing elsewhere. That puts the entire paddock on high alert.

If he wants to stay in F1, Mercedes appears to be the most likely destination. Team principal Toto Wolff has been pursuing him openly for years. However, both George Russell and rising star Kimi Antonelli are said to have multi-year contracts locked in beyond this season. Wolff recently told Austrian media: "We have two drivers with whom we have long-term, multi-year contracts. I could not be happier with both of them." That sounds like a closed door, but in F1, nothing is ever truly locked.

McLaren is another possibility. Verstappen is known to have a good relationship with his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, who is moving there. But Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are both under contract through at least the end of 2027, and McLaren CEO Zak Brown has repeatedly said he believes they have the best driver lineup on the grid. It is hard to see how Verstappen fits into that picture.

Then there is Ferrari. Sources indicate Lewis Hamilton signed a firm three-year deal when he joined for 2025, putting him at Maranello through 2027. Charles Leclerc is also secured long-term. The red cars are not an option for Verstappen in the near term.

The wild card is Fernando Alonso. The two-time world champion is a free agent at the end of this season. He will be 45 in July and just became a father for the first time, but he still loves driving with a passion that few can match. He is tied to Aston Martin, who are struggling this year, but he has finally joined forces with legendary designer Adrian Newey. The question is whether he wants his final F1 chapter to be this.

For now, the market waits. Every contract negotiation, every driver talk, every seat discussion stops until Verstappen decides what he wants. That is what happens when you are the best driver in the world. You become the keystone, and everything else hangs on you.
