Ayari winner gives Brighton 1-0 victory at Manchester City
Yasin Ayari scored in the 11th minute as Brighton beat Manchester City 1-0 at the Etihad. The result left Brighton two points behind City after a second successive league defeat for the hosts.

Brighton beat Manchester City 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, October 31, with Yasin Ayari scoring the only goal after 11 minutes. According to PA's match report, published by Brighton and Hove News, the visitors moved within two points of City, who suffered a second consecutive Premier League defeat after opening their campaign with seven straight wins.

Watch the highlights:

The breakthrough came from a Brighton free-kick. Lewis Dunk sent the ball towards Diego Gomez on the right, and Matheus Nunes could not intercept the resulting low delivery. The ball came off Maxim De Cuyper and reached Ayari, who finished from close range. City were then left chasing an equaliser for the remainder of the afternoon.

PA reported that Iliman Ndiaye was central to City's response, heading wide from an Elliot Anderson delivery and forcing Bart Verbruggen into action after a run through the defence. Later, Ndiaye missed another opportunity from Nico O'Reilly's pass. O'Reilly and Rayan Cherki also threatened before the final whistle, but Brighton held their lead through the closing pressure.

Sports Mole's report from the stadium described another important intervention by Verbruggen when Nunes was played through by substitute Cherki in the second half. The goalkeeper stopped the attempt with his right hand. Verbruggen also turned a powerful Ndiaye effort onto the woodwork, helping Brighton preserve the narrow advantage despite City's sustained attempts to find a way back.

Brighton had opportunities to extend the lead rather than relying entirely on their defence. Early in the second half, Gomez found De Cuyper in space, but his effort went over the crossbar. Sports Mole reported that the victory kept Fabian Hurzeler's team third, three points ahead of fourth-placed Chelsea and four ahead of Liverpool in fifth.

The result also changed the outcome of the teams' second meeting at the Etihad that week. Brighton had been eliminated by City on penalties in the League Cup on Wednesday. This time, Ayari's early finish and the visitors' defensive resistance secured a league victory, while City followed their defeat at Aston Villa with another afternoon without a point.
