Ayari winner lifts Brighton to third as Manchester City suffer second straight league defeat
Yasin Ayari scored in the 11th minute as Brighton beat Manchester City 1-0 on Saturday, moving into third place in the Premier League and handing the hosts a second consecutive league defeat. According to The Guardian’s match report, Fabian Hürzeler’s side reached 19 points with the victory, leaving them two points behind Enzo Maresca’s City.
Watch the highlights:
The decisive move began with a free-kick awarded against Elliot Anderson for a challenge on Ayari, a decision disputed in The Guardian’s account. Lewis Dunk sent the ball towards Diego Gómez on the right. Matheus Nunes failed to clear the ensuing cross, and Maxim De Cuyper returned the ball into the danger area for Ayari to finish with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma out of position.
City created opportunities to respond before the interval, with Iliman Ndiaye prominent in their attacks. He headed wide from an Anderson delivery and later carried the ball from near halfway into Brighton’s penalty area, only to shoot at Bart Verbruggen. Jérémy Doku also threatened down the left, while Erling Haaland was denied after another move involving Anderson as half-time approached. Appeals for penalties over handball incidents involving Luka Vuskovic and Dunk brought no award.
Brighton continued to offer a threat after the break rather than relying entirely on defending their advantage. De Cuyper shot over from a promising position and later forced Donnarumma into a diving save with a header from Pascal Gross’s delivery. At the other end, Ndiaye again advanced down the right and struck a powerful effort that Verbruggen pushed onto the crossbar.
Maresca introduced Rayan Cherki for Ayyoub Bouaddi in the 55th minute, and the substitute released Nunes for a shot that was saved. City kept searching for an equaliser, but another opportunity went begging when Ndiaye sent an effort wide after substitute Nico O’Reilly played the ball across goal. Phil Foden and Allan Elias subsequently replaced Ndiaye and Josko Gvardiol as the hosts sought a way back.
Brighton held on to reverse the outcome of the teams’ Carabao Cup meeting at City on Wednesday, which the hosts had won on penalties. This time Ayari’s early finish proved sufficient, with the visitors protecting their lead through City’s attacking changes and late pressure to secure all three league points.
