Avalanche Two Points Away From Presidents Trophy as Flames Visit Denver
Colorado needs just two more points over their final five games to secure the Presidents Trophy and home-ice advantage throughout the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Colorado Avalanche stand on the precipice of NHL history, requiring just two points from their remaining five regular season games to claim the Presidents Trophy and secure home-ice advantage throughout the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Thursday night's matchup against the Calgary Flames at Ball Arena presents their first opportunity to clinch the league's top overall seed.

Colorado's pursuit of regular season supremacy reached a pivotal milestone Tuesday with a commanding 3-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues. The triumph officially locked up the Western Conference's number one seed, marking the culmination of sustained excellence since December 1st when they first claimed the NHL's best record.

"We set our goals at the start of the year, and we wanted to be on top," captain Gabriel Landeskog declared following the victory in St. Louis. "That's a big step. We know it doesn't mean anything come playoff time, other than we get an extra game at home every series."

With a record of 51-16-10 and 112 points, the Avalanche maintain a six-point cushion over their nearest competitor, the Carolina Hurricanes, who have four games remaining. Colorado also holds the crucial tiebreaker advantage, having gone 1-0-1 in their season series against Carolina.

However, Tuesday's victory came at a significant cost. Forward Nazem Kadri suffered a finger injury after blocking a shot late in the second period, forcing an early exit that will sideline him for an undisclosed period. Head coach Jared Bednar confirmed Wednesday that Kadri will miss time, though no specific timeline has been established.

The injury represents a considerable blow for Colorado, as Kadri has contributed nine points in 16 games since arriving via trade from Calgary on March 6. The veteran center led the Flames in scoring with 50 points before the deadline deal that brought him back to his Stanley Cup-winning team.

Colorado's injury concerns extend beyond Kadri, as star defenseman Cale Makar remains sidelined with an upper-body injury sustained ironically against Calgary on March 30. The good news for Avalanche fans is that Makar is expected to return before the regular season concludes.

Meanwhile, the visiting Flames arrive in Denver playing out the string after being officially eliminated from playoff contention earlier this week. Calgary's 32-36-9 record and 73 points place them well outside postseason consideration, but they showed resilience Tuesday night in Dallas, building a 3-1 third-period lead before falling 4-3 in overtime to the Stars.

"I liked our game," Flames coach Ryan Huska said after the loss. "There was a lot of our game where I thought we played hard. We did a good job away from the pucks, thought we had some lengthy shifts in the offensive zone."

Calgary also dealt with injury issues Tuesday, as defenseman Kevin Bahl managed just two shifts before departing with a lower-body problem.

Thursday's contest marks the second meeting in a compressed stretch between these clubs, with three games scheduled over just nine days. After not facing each other earlier this season, the teams will conclude their series Tuesday in Calgary.

For Colorado, the Presidents Trophy represents more than individual achievement—it symbolizes organizational excellence and provides the optimal playoff path toward another Stanley Cup championship.
