Australia Lead Bangladesh After 18-Wicket Opening Day in Mackay
Australia closed 101 runs ahead after Mitchell Starc's six-wicket haul helped dismiss Bangladesh for 64 on day one of the second Test in Mackay. Bangladesh hit back through Shoriful Islam, who took six wickets as the hosts reached 165-8.

Australia finished a turbulent opening day of the second Test against Bangladesh with a 101-run lead after 18 wickets fell in Mackay. BBC Sport reported that the hosts reached 165-8 at stumps after dismissing Bangladesh for 64, the tourists' fourth-lowest total in Test cricket.

Watch the highlights:

Mitchell Starc struck with the first ball of the match, finding the edge of Shadman Islam's bat, and collected five wickets within his first 22 deliveries. Bangladesh collapsed to 12-5 before eventually being bowled out in 34 overs. Starc finished with 6-12, while Australia captain Pat Cummins took 3-25.

Bangladesh were 39-9 before their final pair carried the score to 64, with Shoriful Islam making 14. The tourists' innings featured poor shot selection alongside demanding fast bowling on a lively surface, but their bowlers then produced an immediate response as Australia's own batting problems continued.

Matt Renshaw, recalled in place of Jake Weatherald following Australia's defeat in the first Test in Darwin, was caught at first slip for eight. Travis Head made 22 before chopping the ball onto his stumps, while Marnus Labuschagne was bowled for four and extended his run without a Test century to 43 innings.

Steve Smith and Cameron Green steadied Australia with a 77-run partnership before Smith was lbw for 42. The hosts then lost four more wickets for 30 runs, including Alex Carey for five and Beau Webster for a first-ball duck. Green remained unbeaten on 51 alongside Nathan Lyon, who was 10 not out at the close.

Shoriful led Bangladesh's fightback with 6-35, ensuring Australia could not turn their bowling dominance into a commanding first-innings total. Starc's six-wicket return moved him past former South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn into 10th place on the all-time Test wicket list with 441, according to BBC Sport. The match resumes with Australia holding the advantage but only two first-innings wickets remaining.
