Australia lead by 139 after Smith catches help dismiss South Africa in Durban
Australia closed day three on 33 without loss after bowling South Africa out for 284. Steve Smith's catching and Pat Cummins' three wickets helped secure a first-innings advantage before bad light intervened.

Australia ended the third day of the first Test in Durban with a 139-run lead after dismissing South Africa for 284. The tourists reached 33 without loss in their second innings before bad light stopped play, with Nic Maddinson unbeaten on 17, according to Australian Associated Press reporting from Kingsmead.

Watch the highlights:

Steve Smith made four catches during South Africa's innings, including two off Nathan Lyon when Temba Bavuma and Kyle Verreynne attempted reverse sweeps. AAP reported that Smith anticipated both shots by moving before contact. He also caught David Bedingham for 49 off Pat Cummins and completed the innings with another slip catch.

South Africa's middle order had briefly rebuilt through Tristan Stubbs and Wiaan Mulder, who made 32 and 30 respectively. IOL Sport's live coverage reported that Cummins dismissed both during an afternoon spell of short-pitched bowling. Verreynne then fell for 13 and Marco Jansen for 26, with their successive dismissals leaving the home side on 197 for eight.

The lower order prevented an even larger deficit. Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer took their partnership past fifty before Maharaj, on 34, was caught by Cummins off Mitchell Starc, IOL reported. Anrich Nortje contributed 16 before edging Beau Webster to Smith to end the innings. South Africa's total left Australia 106 runs ahead before the visitors batted again.

That advantage owed much to Matt Renshaw's work on the second day. The ICC reported that his career-best 190 had carried Australia to 390 after they had earlier slipped to 124 for six. Renshaw and Lyon added 134 for the ninth wicket, with Lyon contributing 27. Renshaw's innings ended shortly after tea when he was caught by Aiden Markram off Harmer, completing a recovery built around substantial support from the lower order.

Cummins finished with three for 54, AAP reported, while Australia's opening pair survived the brief second-innings spell without a dismissal. The tourists retain all ten wickets, but the match remains unfinished after another interruption for light. The opening Test is scheduled to run through October 13.
