Australia A Call-Up to Sideline Nathan McSweeney for Northants Run-In
Nathan McSweeney will miss Northamptonshire’s final three County Championship Division Two matches after being selected to represent Australia A in India. BBC Sport reported that the 27-year-old will remain available for Northants’ next three fixtures before leaving for international duty during the decisive closing stage of the county season.
Watch the highlights:
McSweeney is scheduled to play against Lancashire, Kent and Durham before his departure. His absence will remove Northamptonshire’s leading Championship run-scorer this season: the Australian has accumulated 589 runs at an average just below 50, including three centuries and two half-centuries. He has also played three Test matches for Australia.
His contribution has extended across all three domestic formats in 2026. McSweeney scored 485 runs in the One-Day Cup and added 311 in the T20 Blast, which Northamptonshire won last month. Head coach Darren Lehmann described his exit as a major loss and emphasized the batter’s influence as both a player and a leader within the squad.
Australian seamer Harry Conway will replace McSweeney in the overseas-player slot for Northamptonshire’s final three matches. Conway previously took 34 wickets in eight games during the first part of the season, doing so at an average of 23.79. His most recent appearance for the county came against Durham from June 19 to June 22.
The enforced change arrives with Northamptonshire firmly involved in the promotion contest. They sit third in Division Two, only two points behind second-placed Kent. McSweeney will therefore face Kent before joining Australia A, but Conway will be the overseas option when the county completes its remaining schedule.
McSweeney’s departure is temporary rather than the end of his association with Northamptonshire. He has already agreed a new contract to return for the 2027 season. Before leaving for India, he has three matches to add to a campaign in which his consistent Championship scoring and substantial white-ball totals have made him one of the county’s central performers.
