Austin Smotherman wins Bermuda play-off as Seamus Power boosts tour status
Austin Smotherman beat Seamus Power on the third extra hole to win the weather-shortened Bermuda Championship. Power's runner-up finish is projected to lift him to 53rd in the FedEx Cup Fall standings.

Austin Smotherman won the Bermuda Championship on Monday, beating Seamus Power on the third hole of a play-off after bad weather reduced the tournament to 54 holes. According to BBC Sport, the American secured his second PGA Tour title and his second victory in consecutive starts, following his breakthrough win in Utah earlier this month.

Watch the highlights:

The weather changed both the length of the competition and the way its winner was decided. Sunday's scheduled final round was cancelled, and with further poor conditions forecast for Monday, officials abandoned plans to complete a fourth round. Instead, Smotherman and Power returned for sudden death as the two players tied at the top after three rounds.

Both had reached 16 under par with totals of 197 at Port Royal Golf Course. Smotherman, 32, opened with a 65 before adding successive rounds of 66. Power, the tournament's 2022 champion, shot 66, 64 and 67. Those matching totals meant neither player held an advantage when they resumed their contest for the trophy on Monday.

The play-off began at the par-three 16th, where Power missed a 20-foot putt that would have given him a third PGA Tour title. He then recovered from a bunker to extend the contest to a third extra hole. With the hole location changed, Smotherman needed two putts from 15 feet to make the winning par, while Power could not save par from the rough.

Smotherman credited his partnership with caddie Zak Williamson and the tour's communication during the disruption, BBC Sport reported. He said they had been ready to deal with the changing circumstances and welcomed the clarity once the arrangements for Monday were confirmed. Power expressed disappointment at missing his opportunity, saying he had struck good shots during the play-off but had not judged the wind correctly.

Despite that frustration, the runner-up finish significantly improved Power's position for next season. The 39-year-old Irishman entered the week 103rd in the FedEx Cup Fall standings after competing with conditional status this year. BBC Sport reported that he was projected to rise to 53rd, with the top 100 earning cards for 2027, leaving him effectively assured of retaining his place on tour.
