Auburn Center Lew Maintains NFL Draft Optimism Despite ACL Setback and Recovery Timeline
Former Auburn offensive lineman Connor Lew impressed at the NFL Combine with 31 bench press reps while recovering from a torn ACL, embracing his draft journey despite the injury's impact on his stock.

Connor Lew's path to the NFL has encountered significant obstacles, but the former Auburn offensive lineman remains steadfast in pursuing his professional football dreams despite a torn ACL that ended his college career and potentially affected his draft positioning.

Lew suffered the devastating knee injury in October 2025, marking his final appearance in an Auburn uniform. However, the setback has not diminished his enthusiasm for the draft process or his confidence in eventual recovery.

"This whole process has been unbelievable," Lew told media following Auburn's Pro Day at the Woltosz Football Performance Center. "It's everything you dream about growing up as a kid, being a big fan of this sport and it's finally here and you're the one actually running these drills, you're the one doing the bench press, you're the one in these meetings talking to these scouts."

The injury prevented Lew from participating in any testing during Auburn's Pro Day on March 24, though he expressed satisfaction with his recovery progress without providing specific timelines for his return to full activity.

Despite the physical limitations imposed by his rehabilitation, Lew managed to make a strong impression during February's NFL Combine. His participation was limited by the knee injury, preventing him from showcasing his athleticism through running drills and agility tests that often define lineman evaluations.

However, Lew demonstrated exceptional upper body strength during the bench press portion of combine testing. His 31 repetitions led all centers at the event, providing scouts with tangible evidence of his physical capabilities despite the lower body injury.

This impressive showing offered a crucial opportunity for Lew to distinguish himself from other prospects while managing the limitations imposed by his recovery timeline. The bench press performance became particularly significant given his inability to demonstrate mobility and footwork that define modern offensive line play.

According to draft analysts, Lew's injury has inevitably affected his stock, with projections placing him in the second or third round rather than the potential first-round consideration he might have received with a healthy senior season.

The timing of his injury proved particularly unfortunate, occurring during what many considered his breakthrough campaign at Auburn. The loss of his final college season eliminated opportunities for continued development and exposure against high-level competition.

Despite these challenges, Lew has maintained active communication with multiple NFL organizations. He indicated that certain teams appear to offer natural fits for both his skill set and their offensive schemes, though he declined to identify specific organizations.

"There are some teams that he can envision himself fitting in both scheme and personnel wise," according to his assessment of ongoing conversations with NFL personnel departments.

Lew's draft experience reflects broader themes affecting college football players who suffer significant injuries during their final eligibility seasons. The balance between rushing back for additional game film and prioritizing long-term health creates complex decisions for prospects and their advisors.

For draft night, Lew plans to return home to Georgia, surrounded by family and friends who have supported his football journey from youth leagues through his Auburn career. This setting will provide emotional support regardless of when his name is called.

The Georgia native has embraced a day-by-day approach to his preparation and recovery, recognizing the unique nature of the pre-draft experience. "Trying take it day by day and enjoy the process because this is the only time you'll ever get to do something like this," he explained.

Lew's perspective demonstrates maturity in handling adversity while maintaining focus on controllable factors. His gratitude for reaching this level despite setbacks reflects the mental toughness that attracted college recruiters and now interests professional scouts.

"Everyday's been great and I keep reminding myself how grateful I am for this opportunity and to be in this position," he noted, emphasizing appreciation over frustration regarding his circumstances.

The Auburn program has supported Lew throughout his recovery while continuing their own preparation for the upcoming season under new coaching leadership. His Pro Day appearance provided closure to his college career while launching the next phase of his football journey.

Regardless of draft position, Lew's combination of physical tools, mental approach, and recovery dedication positions him for potential NFL success once he returns to full health. His bench press performance suggests the strength foundation necessary for professional offensive line play remains intact despite his injury challenges.
