Aston Villa withdraw legal threat against Jamie Carragher after apology
Aston Villa have withdrawn their threat of legal action against Jamie Carragher following his apology. The club had not begun proceedings over his podcast comments about Unai Emery and Villa supporters.

Aston Villa have withdrawn their threat of legal action against Jamie Carragher following an apology from the Sky Sports pundit, BBC Sport reported. The club had announced on Friday that it intended to take action over comments he made on the Stick to Football podcast, but no legal proceedings were initiated.

Watch the highlights:

The dispute followed Carragher's remarks about Villa manager Unai Emery and criticism from the club's supporters. The former Liverpool and England defender had suggested Emery as a possible replacement for Michael Carrick at Manchester United. He also told Villa fans to stop complaining about his comments, prompting the club to object to language it considered insulting.

Carragher issued a public apology on social media on Saturday, addressing Villa, the club's owners and supporters. He acknowledged that his choice of words had been inappropriate. While saying he had intended the remarks humorously, he accepted that they had not been received that way. BBC Sport reported that Villa subsequently ended the threat of legal action following that apology.

His original argument concerned the relative standing of clubs and their ability to attract players and managers. Carragher cited Cristiano Ronaldo's move from Manchester United to Real Madrid as an example of one club recruiting a leading figure from another. He also argued that Villa could, in turn, recruit players or managers from clubs below them.

Emery's record at Villa provided the backdrop to the disagreement. He arrived in 2022 and took the club from a relegation battle into the Champions League. Under the Spaniard, Villa also won the Europa League in 2026, adding European silverware to their progress in domestic football.

BBC Sport noted that Villa have reached the Champions League in two of the past three seasons. Emery previously managed Paris St-Germain and Arsenal, a history Carragher referred to when discussing whether the coach might want another opportunity at a larger club. Those comments were the pundit's assessment of Emery's ambitions, not an announcement of a managerial move. The confirmed development is Villa's decision not to pursue its threatened action.
