Aston Villa announce planned legal action against Jamie Carragher
Aston Villa have announced plans to take legal action against Jamie Carragher following comments about the club and its supporters. A statement posted on social media on Friday and signed by chairman Nassef Sawiris set out the club's intention, according to reports from BBC Sport and the Press Association carried by the Guardian.
Watch the highlights:
Villa described the remarks as unacceptable insults and said they would not let anyone obstruct the club's progress in English and European football. The announcement concerns an intention to initiate legal action; neither report provided details of a filed claim, a court hearing or the legal grounds on which any case would proceed.
The dispute followed Carragher's appearance on the Stick to Football podcast, where he discussed Villa manager Unai Emery in connection with Manchester United. Carragher argued that United occupied a higher position in football's hierarchy and suggested Emery might welcome the opportunity to manage another major club. He then used an expletive while telling Villa supporters to stop their criticism, prompting the response from the club.
BBC Sport also reported Carragher's explanation of the exchange. In a social media post, the former Liverpool defender said he had been joking after receiving criticism from Villa fans over his suggestion that Emery might be interested in United. He pointed to his previous praise for both the manager and the club, including his reaction to Villa's Europa League success in Istanbul.
Carragher expanded on his position on the Overlap Daily, describing Emery as the league's best manager and explaining that he would ask about the Spaniard if he were making decisions at United. He stressed that he was not predicting Emery would leave Villa. His argument, he said, concerned whether a manager would want to test himself beyond a club where he was already successful.
The pundit also acknowledged that he perhaps should not have used the language directed at supporters, while maintaining that the exchange was intended in jest after comments on his social media timeline. Villa's statement nevertheless made clear that the club intended to pursue the matter. The reports establish the announced legal step and Carragher's explanation, but do not establish that proceedings have already begun.
