Aston Villa Hand No. 1 Role to Japan Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki
Aston Villa have turned to Japan international Zion Suzuki as the successor to Emiliano Martinez. The 23-year-old arrives after establishing himself at Parma and strengthening his position with the national team.

Aston Villa have selected Japan international Zion Suzuki to take over in goal from Emiliano Martinez, placing the 23-year-old in one of the Premier League's most visible positions. The Guardian reports that Suzuki is set to succeed the World Cup-winning goalkeeper at a club competing in the Champions League, making him Japan's first goalkeeper in the English top flight.

Watch the highlights:

Suzuki reaches Villa after a rapid rise through European football. He began with Urawa Reds in Japan before moving to Belgian side Sint-Truiden in August 2023. That season led to a five-year deal with Parma 12 months later, and he quickly became the Italian club's first-choice goalkeeper.

His profile is built around strength, athleticism and shot-stopping, but his distribution and command of the penalty area also stood out in Serie A. According to The Guardian, Suzuki ranked second in the Italian league last season for crosses caught and high claims, and was also second for successful long passes. The report noted that his positioning can still improve and that adjusting to crowded six-yard areas in England may take time.

Suzuki has also strengthened his standing with Japan after a difficult Asian Cup. He made several errors as Japan were eliminated in the quarter-finals and subsequently received racist abuse online. Suzuki, whose mother is Japanese and father is Ghanaian-American, spoke publicly about the discriminatory messages and said he hoped sharing his experience could help athletes and children from varied backgrounds.

He then rebuilt his international form and impressed for Japan at this summer's World Cup. The Guardian highlighted a low save from Vinicius Junior among his notable moments and reported that he has made few mistakes for the national team since the Asian Cup, while acknowledging that there were occasional errors during his time at Parma.

Villa manager Unai Emery will now oversee Suzuki's transition to English football and the task of replacing Martinez. Asian goalkeepers have been uncommon in the Premier League: Oman's Ali Al-Habsi represented Bolton and Wigan, while Philippines international Neil Etheridge played every league match for Cardiff in 2018-19. Suzuki's arrival gives him an opportunity to establish himself for Villa while extending that short history.
