Aston Villa Add Four Scandinavian Players in Summer Overhaul
Aston Villa have brought in four Scandinavian players as part of an eight-player summer recruitment drive. The WSL club are reshaping a squad that finished ninth last season.

Aston Villa have added four Scandinavian players among eight senior summer arrivals as manager Natalie Arroyo reshapes the squad following a ninth-place Women's Super League finish. BBC Sport reported that the group comprises three Norway internationals and one Denmark international, giving Villa a new core from a region that was not represented in their squad last season.

Watch the highlights:

Norway defender Mathilde Harviken and Denmark striker Amalie Vangsgaard have both joined from Juventus. Villa have also signed Norway midfielders Kamilla Melgard and Justine Kielland. The four arrivals give the club the fourth-largest Scandinavian contingent in the WSL, behind Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool, according to the BBC.

The recruitment follows several significant departures. Kirsty Hanson moved to Tottenham, Ebony Salmon joined West Ham and Lucy Staniforth retired. Villa are seeking improvement after recording their lowest WSL finish in five years, having previously climbed as high as fifth in 2023.

Familiarity within the incoming group may help the players settle. Kielland and Harviken already know each other through the Norway national team, while Harviken and Vangsgaard were teammates at Juventus. BBC Sport reported that the Norwegian players plan to live in the same area of Birmingham as they adapt to their new club and city.

Villa's wider rebuild extends beyond the Scandinavian signings. Eighteen members of the 27-player senior squad have arrived since 2025, and goalkeeper Emily Ramsey is another of the eight additions this summer after joining from Everton. Established players including defender Anna Patten, midfielder Missy Bo Kearns and striker Rachel Daly remain important sources of WSL experience.

The club will enter its seventh season in the English top flight after staging all home league matches at Villa Park since 2024. Arroyo is being backed to oversee a substantial overhaul, with the immediate task of restoring Villa to the upper half of the WSL and closing the gap on the teams competing for European places.
