Aston Villa beat Fenerbahce 6-0 for record European victory
Aston Villa recorded their biggest European victory by beating Fenerbahce 6-0 at Villa Park on Wednesday, with Nicolas Jackson and Ross Barkley each scoring twice. According to BBC Sport, the Champions League result also delivered Villa's first home win of the season after a difficult domestic start.
Watch the highlights:
Sky Sports reported that Johan Manzambi opened the scoring in the 12th minute when his effort struck Milan Skriniar and went past Ederson. Villa still needed Zion Suzuki to deny Vedat Muriqi before Jackson made it 2-0 in the 31st minute from Boubacar Kamara's pass. Oguz Aydin then hit the crossbar for the visitors.
Jackson added his second in the 39th minute, giving Villa a three-goal lead at the interval. The scoring continued after the break: Manzambi earned a penalty that Barkley converted in the 68th minute, and the midfielder scored again four minutes later with a deflected shot. Substitute Tammy Abraham completed the scoring from Alysson's pass in the 90th minute.
The result gave Villa two victories from their opening two Champions League matches, Sky Sports reported. Fenerbahce coach Ismail Kartal apologised to the club's supporters afterwards, describing the outcome as unacceptable and saying mistakes had proved costly at this level. He said his team needed to concentrate on their next league fixture.
BBC Sport reported that Villa now have only one defeat in seven games, while Jackson has four goals in his past three appearances and five this season. His double continued his reunion with Unai Emery, who previously coached him at Villarreal. Jackson had wanted the penalty opportunity for a hat-trick, but Barkley was the designated taker.
Emery nevertheless stressed that the squad's development remained unfinished after a summer that brought 10 new players. In comments reported by BBC Sport, he said Fenerbahce did not deserve the six-goal margin, while welcoming Villa's progress and their first home success. He identified the next match against Newcastle as the immediate priority because of Villa's shortage of Premier League points.
