Jackson and Barkley score twice as Aston Villa beat Fenerbahce 6-0
Aston Villa recorded their biggest European victory and first home win of the season by beating Fenerbahce 6-0. Nicolas Jackson and Ross Barkley each scored twice in the Champions League match.

Aston Villa beat Fenerbahce 6-0 in the Champions League to record the biggest European victory in their history and end their wait for a home win this season. Nicolas Jackson and Ross Barkley each scored twice, with Johan Manzambi and Tammy Abraham also on target. According to BBC Sport’s match coverage, the result left Unai Emery’s side with only one defeat in their past seven games.

Watch the highlights:

Villa established a three-goal lead before the interval through Manzambi and Jackson’s double. Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki also made two important saves as the hosts took control against a Fenerbahce team featuring former Premier League players Ederson, Nathan Ake, Romelu Lukaku and Nelson Semedo. Barkley’s two goals and Abraham’s late finish completed the scoring, while Leon Goretzka made his Villa debut as a late substitute.

One of Barkley’s goals came from the penalty spot, denying Jackson an opportunity to complete a hat-trick. Barkley had been designated to take penalties before the match. Jackson told TNT Sports that he had wanted the kick but placed greater importance on the team’s victory. His double took him to five goals for the season, including four in his past three appearances.

The home breakthrough followed a difficult start at Villa Park. Villa had collected one point from their opening three home Premier League fixtures, drawing 2-2 with Brentford on Saturday after losing the previous two. Emery had said the rebuilding of the North Stand had affected his team. Against Fenerbahce, however, Villa scored all three first-half goals while attacking that end, where they had previously scored only once this season.

Emery welcomed the result while stressing that his reshaped squad still needed time. Villa brought in 10 new players during the summer, and the manager had described the opening weeks of the campaign as resembling an extended pre-season. After the match, he said the visitors did not deserve to lose by six goals, but highlighted Villa’s progress and the importance of collecting three Champions League points.

Jackson’s contribution continued a productive reunion with Emery, who gave him his debut at Villarreal. The forward arrived at Villa after helping Bayern Munich win the Bundesliga during a loan spell from Chelsea. Emery praised both his scoring and defensive work against Fenerbahce. The manager’s next focus is Saturday’s trip to Newcastle, with Villa still needing to improve their Premier League points return.
