Asa Tribe returns to Jersey squad as World Cup qualification bid advances
Asa Tribe has returned to Jersey’s squad for the first time since the summer of 2025, bringing the Glamorgan and England Lions batter back into the island’s Cricket World Cup qualification campaign. BBC Sport reported that the 22-year-old welcomed the chance to represent his homeland again after a busy year in county and franchise cricket.
Watch the highlights:
Jersey lead the six-team ICC Challenge League A group and need two more victories to secure progression to the Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play-off in Nepal in December. That would represent another step in their qualification campaign, rather than a place at the World Cup itself. Tribe made his international debut for Jersey at 17 and has now returned after more than a year away from the side.
His previous appearances brought two significant contributions in the last round of Challenge League A fixtures. Tribe made 175 as Jersey beat Papua New Guinea by 160 runs, then followed that with an unbeaten 53 in an eight-wicket victory over Qatar. According to the BBC, the innings against Papua New Guinea remains the highest individual score in the ICC Challenge League. Tribe told BBC Radio Jersey that the performance held particular importance for him because of its contribution to the team’s progress.
That 175 was also his third List A century in a week, following two hundreds for Glamorgan. The run of scores preceded his selection for England Lions that winter. He is due to travel to the Caribbean with the Lions next month, continuing his involvement with the development side while also resuming his Jersey career.
Tribe’s recent experience extends beyond those two teams. He has played franchise cricket in South Africa and Canada, represented Welsh Fire in The Hundred and helped Glamorgan retain their County Championship Division One status this year. The Welsh county had earned promotion in 2025 after spending 20 years in the second division.
A senior England place remains an ambition, not a confirmed next step. Speaking to BBC Radio Jersey, Tribe acknowledged the strength of the England side and the need to improve his own game before any opportunity arose. For now, his return gives Jersey access to a batter whose most recent international appearances produced both a competition record and substantial contributions to two victories.
