Arthur Fery Targets US Open Debut After Wimbledon Breakthrough

Arthur Fery is preparing for his first US Open main-draw appearance after a Wimbledon breakthrough transformed his ranking and his place on the ATP Tour. The 24-year-old British player rose to world No. 36 after winning five matches and reaching the semifinals at the All England Club, according to an interview published by The Guardian on Tuesday.

Fery's run included victories over Grigor Dimitrov and world No. 10 Flavio Cobolli before he lost in straight sets to Alexander Zverev in the last four. The performance made Fery the first British male wildcard to reach a Grand Slam singles semifinal. It also moved him far beyond the top-100 target he had set after beginning the year at No. 180.

The rise followed an extended struggle with an arm injury. Fery told The Guardian that the problem severely restricted his schedule between 2023 and 2025 and caused him to question whether his body would limit his career. He said the injury is improving and has allowed him to play more tournaments, but stressed that it is not completely resolved.

Fery returned to competition at the Cincinnati Open last week, his first tournament since Wimbledon. He reached the third round and lost 7-5, 7-6 to world No. 8 Alex de Minaur after putting together a five-game run in the second set. A year earlier, Fery had entered Cincinnati qualifying as a late alternate while ranked well outside the tour's leading group.

His progress over the past 12 months also includes his first Challenger title, won in Barranquilla, Colombia. Fery said the victory was especially important during a period when he was trying to build ranking points and establish himself after injury. His Wimbledon result has now secured direct entry into the US Open field, where he narrowly missed a seeding.

Fery has previously played twice at the junior US Open, but this will be his first senior appearance at Flushing Meadows. He told The Guardian that his next objective is to establish himself among the top 30. He identified clay-court play, his serve, handling high balls and sustaining his level through consecutive long matches as areas for further development.
