Arthur Fery Rallies Past Aleksandar Kovacevic Into Winston-Salem Semifinals

Arthur Fery recovered from a set down to beat Aleksandar Kovacevic 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 and advance to the Winston-Salem Open semifinals. BBC Sport reported that the British fourth seed won five consecutive games after the second set reached 5-5, changing the direction of Thursday's quarterfinal in North Carolina.

Kovacevic took the opening set 6-3, putting Fery under immediate pressure in the last-eight contest. The match turned late in the second set when Fery broke serve to claim it 7-5. That result forced a deciding set after he had been two games from defeat with the score level at 5-5.

Fery carried that momentum into the third set and established a 3-0 advantage. He protected the lead and served out the match 6-3, completing the comeback and securing his first semifinal appearance since his run at Wimbledon in July, according to the BBC report.

The 24-year-old will play James Duckworth in the last four. Duckworth advanced by defeating Hungarian 15th seed Fabian Marozsan 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-4 in another three-set quarterfinal. Fery and Duckworth have met recently, with Fery beating the Australian in Cincinnati earlier in August.

Fery's progress in Winston-Salem follows the run to the Wimbledon semifinals that moved him into the world's top 40. BBC Sport listed him at No. 37 in the ATP rankings and reported that the rise earned him a place in the US Open main draw for the first time.

He narrowly missed a seeding position for the season's final Grand Slam and has been drawn against 13th seed Lorenzo Musetti in the opening round in New York. Before that match, Fery's immediate assignment is the Winston-Salem semifinal against Duckworth, where another victory would put him into the championship match.
