Arteta challenges penalty ruling after Konsa and Ballard clash

Mikel Arteta criticised the decision to award Sunderland a penalty against Arsenal, saying the incident could have changed the result despite his team's eventual 2-0 victory. Speaking to BBC Match of the Day after Saturday's game, the Arsenal manager argued that Ezri Konsa had been pulled down by Dan Ballard rather than committing the offence himself.

Referee John Brooks awarded the spot-kick after the two players went to ground, and the video assistant referee left that decision in place, BBC Sport reported. Arteta said officials should take responsibility for protecting the game and described the award as unacceptable. His complaint concerned the decision itself, even though David Raya saved Enzo Le Fee's effort.

The incident produced differing assessments among former players. BBC Sport reported that Ashley Williams agreed with Arteta's interpretation on Match of the Day. Karen Carney and Martin Keown, speaking on TNT Sports, instead highlighted the risk Konsa took by grappling with Ballard. Those were their assessments, not a change to the match officials' ruling.

The timing of Raya's intervention was crucial. Opta Analyst recorded the save at 55 minutes and 40 seconds, with Bruno Guimaraes scoring just 121 seconds later. The midfielder's long-range effort put Arsenal ahead in the 58th minute, turning a possible Sunderland breakthrough into an advantage for the visitors within little more than two minutes.

Sunderland continued to threaten after falling behind. Opta's report described Nordi Mukiele sending an acrobatic attempt onto the roof of the net before Raya denied him from a Granit Xhaka delivery. Bukayo Saka eventually settled the match with a stoppage-time penalty after Reinildo Mandava fouled him and received a second yellow card.

Opta also recorded Arsenal winning 15 of 17 aerial duels in their own half, including all of those inside their penalty area. The result brought their ninth consecutive Premier League victory and fourth win from four league fixtures this season. Arsenal left with the points, but Arteta's post-match comments made clear that the saved penalty had not ended his objection.
