Raya penalty save and Guimaraes strike help Arsenal beat Sunderland 2-0

Arsenal beat Sunderland 2-0 at the Stadium of Light after David Raya saved a penalty and substitute Bruno Guimaraes put the visitors ahead moments later. The decisive passage came after Sunderland were awarded a penalty for Ezri Konsa's challenge on Dan Ballard at a corner. Raya reached Enzo le Fee's effort and diverted it against the post. Just 121 seconds after the save, Guimaraes struck from outside the penalty area, with his shot going in off the underside of the crossbar.

Mikel Arteta challenged the penalty decision after the match, telling BBC Match of the Day that Ballard had brought Konsa down rather than been fouled by him. Referee John Brooks awarded the spot kick and the video assistant referee did not overturn it. Arteta, who had been booked in the first half for repeatedly leaving his technical area, said he had reviewed the incident numerous times and remained unable to understand the decision.

The incident drew differing assessments from former players. According to BBC Sport, Karen Carney and Martin Keown pointed to the risks of holding opponents under this season's tighter approach to grappling at corners. Ashley Williams instead argued on Match of the Day that Ballard had pulled Konsa's shoulder down. Those contrasting views concerned the same challenge; Arteta's criticism did not change the on-field ruling.

Raya's intervention was his second Premier League penalty save, BBC Sport reported. Arsenal have now recorded five clean sheets in six matches across all competitions this season, including each of their three away fixtures. Arteta also praised his team's defending afterwards, acknowledging that the visitors had needed to negotiate sustained pressure and difficult spells before securing the result.

Guimaraes told TNT Sports that the penalty save had given Arsenal renewed belief to attack. The midfielder had not started a match since the Community Shield and had recovered from a minor hamstring injury, according to the BBC report. His contribution from the bench supplied the opening goal as Arsenal continued their winning league run.
