Arsenal Penalty Overturned by VAR as Hosts Trail Lyon in WCL Semi-Final
Arsenal's Women's Champions League dreams hung in the balance after a controversial VAR call denied them an early lead against Lyon, with the French giants capitalizing to take a first-leg advantage into the return fixture at the Emirates.
Watch the highlights:
The incident occurred in the 23rd minute when Arsenal appeared to have been awarded a penalty after Lia Walti went down in the box following a challenge from Lyon defender Sakina Karchaoui. The home crowd erupted in celebration, but referee Maria Sole Bertolini was immediately summoned to the VAR monitor.
After a agonizing three-minute review, the penalty was overturned, with replays clearly showing Walti's foot had made minimal contact and she had initiated the fall. The decision sparked fury from the Arsenal bench and disbelief throughout the stadium.
Lyon, the competition's most successful club, seized the momentum and took the lead just four minutes later through Ada Hegerberg, who nodded home from a corner kick. The Norwegian striker's 42nd goal of the season proved the difference in a tightly contested first leg.
Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall cut a frustrated figure in his post-match comments. "The penalty call was clear and obvious. Walti was fouled - the VAR should not have overturned that decision. We're not happy with the officiating."
