Arsenal Open Premier League Title Defence With 3-0 Coventry Win
Arsenal began their Premier League title defence with a controlled 3-0 home victory over promoted Coventry City. Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard supplied the goals at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal opened their Premier League title defence with a 3-0 victory over Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday, giving Mikel Arteta’s side a comfortable start to the new campaign. Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and captain Martin Ødegaard scored as the champions controlled the promoted visitors.

Watch the highlights:

The Guardian reported that Havertz put Arsenal ahead in the 15th minute after Coventry lost possession on their right. Christos Tzolis and Riccardo Calafiori combined on Arsenal’s left, with Calafiori sending the ball into the path of Havertz for the finish. Tzolis had already threatened twice during a lively opening spell.

Saka doubled the advantage soon afterward. A move involving Declan Rice and Ødegaard created the opening, and Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth’s attempt to deal with a cross from Tzolis left Saka with a close-range chance. Coventry midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi was then booked for bringing down Myles Lewis-Skelly as the visitors struggled to slow Arsenal’s attacks.

Coventry did produce a late first-half threat when Loum Tchaouna tried to catch David Raya off his line with a speculative lob. Any prospect of a second-half recovery was quickly reduced, however, as Ødegaard added Arsenal’s third four minutes after the restart. Ben White provided the pass before the midfielder’s mishit effort found its way beyond Rushworth.

Arsenal continued to create chances without extending the score. Rushworth tipped a powerful Lewis-Skelly drive over the bar, while another Ødegaard attempt was deflected wide. With the result secure, Arteta withdrew Rice and Saka and later replaced Ødegaard, using the depth available in his squad. Coventry substitute Jack Rudoni went closest to a consolation late in the match.

The result extended Arsenal’s run without a home league defeat by a newly promoted opponent to 46 matches, according to the Guardian. For Coventry, the fixture marked their first Premier League appearance in 25 years. Frank Lampard named five new signings in his lineup, and the promoted club will now turn its attention to its home match against Hull.
