Arsenal Go Back Above Man City with Nervy Newcastle Win
Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League with a hard-fought victory over Newcastle United at St James' Park, moving two points clear of Manchester City with three games remaining.

Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at St James' Park on Saturday, moving two points clear of Manchester City with just three games remaining in the title race.

Watch the highlights:

The decisive moment came in the 68th minute when Martin Ødegaard curled a magnificent free-kick past Nick Pope from 20 yards out. The Arsenal captain had been quiet for much of the contest but produced a moment of quality when it mattered most to settle an tense affair.

The Gunners had to survive a nervous final 20 minutes as Newcastle pressed for an equaliser, with Pope forced into a smart save to deny Gabriel Martinelli in the closing stages. Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya also made crucial interventions to preserve the clean sheet.

Mikel Arteta praised his side's resilience after the match. "It was a huge three points. The performance wasn't perfect but the mentality and character to grind out a result in a difficult environment was excellent," the Arsenal manager said.

The victory means Arsenal now sit on 82 points, two ahead of Manchester City who have a game in hand. City face Wolves on Wednesday before the two sides could potentially meet in a decisive encounter at the Etihad on the final day of the season.

Newcastle's defeat leaves them seventh in the table, three points behind Chelsea in the final European qualification spot. Eddie Howe will be disappointed with his side's lack of cutting edge in the final third, having created several promising openings without testing Raya sufficiently.
