Arsenal Add Cardiff Teenager Axel Donczew to Scholarship Intake

Arsenal have added Cardiff City attacking midfielder Axel Donczew to their first-year scholarship intake, taking the 16-year-old from the Championship club's academy. BBC Sport reported on Sunday that the teenager has also signed a pre-contract agreement with Arsenal, who said the arrangement is intended to lead to professional terms with the north London club.

Cardiff said they had offered Donczew terms to continue his development in Wales and had made efforts to keep him. According to the club's account, however, the player chose to pursue a move away from the Welsh capital. No transfer fee or compensation figure was disclosed in the BBC report, leaving the financial terms of his switch unconfirmed.

Donczew had already reached Cardiff's senior side before joining the Premier League champions' youth setup. He was 15 years and 234 days old when he came off the bench against Newport County in the EFL Trophy last October, becoming the youngest senior player in Cardiff's history at that time.

That club record was subsequently broken by Noah Anyadike this August. Donczew nevertheless leaves Cardiff with two first-team appearances to his name: his debut against Newport and another substitute outing in an EFL Trophy defeat by Wimbledon last December. Both senior appearances came while he was still progressing through the Bluebirds' academy.

At international level, Donczew has represented Wales in youth football. He is also eligible to play for Poland, meaning his long-term senior international affiliation has not been settled by his appearances for Wales at age-group level. The available report did not specify which Arsenal youth team he will represent first or provide a timetable for a potential senior debut.

The move places Donczew in Arsenal's scholarship programme rather than immediately confirming him as a professional first-team player. Arsenal's statement links the pre-contract agreement to future professional terms, while Cardiff's statement confirms that the midfielder declined their offer to remain. For now, the confirmed development is that one of Cardiff's youngest-ever senior players will continue his training and development with Arsenal.
