Armstrong misses late winner as Birmingham hold Wolves in derby

Birmingham City preserved their unbeaten start to the Championship season by twice coming from behind to draw 2-2 with Wolverhampton Wanderers at St Andrew's on Sunday. According to the Guardian's match report, Wolves had a late opportunity to take all three points, but Adam Armstrong sent his 87th-minute attempt over an open goal from 10 yards.

Wolves moved ahead in the third minute when Fer Lopez completed a move involving Raul Jimenez and Rodrigo Gomes, scoring his third goal of the season. Gomes then had a chance to double the advantage in the 19th minute after Jimenez won possession, but Birmingham goalkeeper James Beadle saved his attempted finish.

Jay Stansfield pulled Birmingham level after controlling Patrick Roberts' pass and driving a shot into the near top corner. The Guardian reported that Stansfield appeared to handle the ball in the buildup, but the goal stood. Wolves responded shortly after the half-hour mark when Ladislav Krejci headed in following Andre's flick from a Hugo Bueno corner.

The visitors' second lead did not last. Jackson Tchatchoua tried to direct Phil Neumann's long diagonal back toward goalkeeper Jose Sa, but the Wolves right-back instead sent the ball over Sa and into his own net. That mistake restored parity before halftime and ultimately completed the scoring.

Both teams struck the crossbar after the break, with Jimenez hitting the frame for Wolves and Neumann doing the same for Birmingham. The hosts controlled more possession in the second half, while each side also appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty during the match.

Wolves created the clearest late opening when Lopez dispossessed Demarai Gray and squared the ball to Armstrong with the goalkeeper out of position. Armstrong lifted his shot over the empty net, leaving the score tied. Birmingham nearly claimed a winner themselves when Marvin Ducksch's free kick headed toward the top corner, but Sa tipped it away to secure a point for Wolves.
