Argentine League to Stop Matches for Lionel Messi Tribute

Argentina's domestic football league will pause every match in the 10th minute this weekend for a minute of applause honoring Lionel Messi's international career. BBC Sport reported that the Argentine Football Association announced the tribute after the 39-year-old retired from national-team duty on Monday.

The timing reflects the number 10 shirt Messi wore for Argentina. The association said referees will stop play in all matches at that point and invite a general round of applause recognizing his career with the national side. The tribute extends across the weekend's league program rather than being confined to one stadium or fixture.

Messi's final Argentina appearance came in the 2026 World Cup final against Spain in July, according to BBC Sport. Argentina lost that match after Messi had helped the team reach the final, including playing a key role in eliminating England in the semifinals. He had captained Argentina to its previous World Cup title in Qatar in 2022.

The former Barcelona forward ends his international career as Argentina's record appearance-maker and goalscorer. BBC Sport listed his totals at 207 caps and 125 goals. He also won two Copa America titles with Argentina and received the Ballon d'Or eight times during his career. His 21 World Cup goals place him second on the competition's all-time scoring list, one behind France forward Kylian Mbappe.

Messi first played for Argentina's senior team in 2005, entering as a 63rd-minute substitute in a 2-1 friendly victory over Hungary. He initially retired from international football in 2016 after Argentina lost the Copa America final to Chile, a shootout in which he missed a penalty, but he later reversed that decision. The defeat had been Argentina's fourth major-final loss in nine years.

Although Messi moved to Barcelona's La Masia academy when he was 13 and has never played senior club football in Argentina, the planned league-wide stoppage will give domestic supporters a coordinated chance to recognize his national-team record.
