Antonelli Dreams of GT Endurance Partnership with F1 Rival Verstappen
Mercedes driver expresses desire to team up with Red Bull champion for sportscar racing despite their Formula 1 rivalry.

Mercedes Formula 1 driver Kimi Antonelli has revealed his ambitious desire to partner with championship rival Max Verstappen in an endurance racing event, demonstrating how shared passion for GT racing can transcend team rivalries in the sport premier category.

The 19-year-old Italian, who recently captured his maiden F1 victory at the Chinese Grand Prix, expressed genuine enthusiasm about the prospect of sharing a cockpit with the four-time world champion during the upcoming motorsport calendar.

I would love to do an endurance race with Max together, Antonelli declared while speaking in Shanghai. I think that would be pretty awesome. It is cool because we both have passion for GTs. Obviously, on my side, it came from my dad with the GT team.

Antonelli family connections to sportscar racing run deep, with his father Marco serving as an accomplished driver with decades of experience in GT and TCR machinery. This heritage has fostered the young Mercedes star natural affinity for endurance competition beyond his primary Formula 1 commitments.

The teenage sensation has already demonstrated his capabilities in GT racing, contesting an Italian GT round with his family-run AKM Motorsport team in 2023. His debut performance proved immediately successful, securing pole position and victory at Misano in his first competitive outing in the category.

Verstappen renewed interest in sportscar racing has captured attention throughout the motorsport community, particularly his upcoming debut at the Nurburgring 24 Hours driving a Mercedes-AMG GT3 for Winward Racing. This collaboration creates intriguing possibilities for future partnerships with Mercedes-affiliated drivers.

It is really cool for him to do the 24 hours of Nurburgring. I think it is going to be a really cool event, and definitely I will be watching it, Antonelli noted, expressing admiration for his Formula 1 rival endeavors outside their primary championship battle.

The Mercedes driver has already taken proactive steps toward expanding his GT racing experience, requesting opportunities to test at legendary circuits that have captured his imagination. I have already asked for a test at the Nordschleife, for example, because it is a track that I love, and I would love to be able to try it in the real world as well.

Verstappen partnership with Mercedes for his GT racing activities, despite driving for rival Red Bull in Formula 1, demonstrates how manufacturer relationships operate differently across motorsport disciplines. This arrangement could facilitate future collaboration with Mercedes-affiliated drivers like Antonelli.

The four-time world champion praise for Antonelli following his Chinese Grand Prix triumph reflects mutual respect that extends beyond their competitive rivalry. It is fantastic, but I am of course not surprised, Verstappen commented. This was definitely coming, and it will not be his last one.

Antonelli vision for their potential partnership extends beyond simple competition to encompass the unique experience endurance racing provides compared to their regular Formula 1 duties. It is something that in the future I would really like to do, to race with him in an endurance race. I think it would be a really cool pair and it will be a really cool experience.

The prospect highlights how modern Formula 1 drivers increasingly pursue diverse racing experiences during their careers, with endurance events offering different challenges and requiring distinct skill sets compared to Grand Prix competition. These opportunities allow drivers to develop broader motorsport expertise while maintaining their primary focus.

Occasionally, I go and test when I can, and obviously, Max as well has been really enjoying it, Antonelli observed, noting their shared commitment to expanding their racing horizons beyond Formula 1 boundaries.

While Antonelli primary focus remains his Mercedes Formula 1 career, his enthusiasm for potential GT racing collaboration demonstrates the broader passion for motorsport that drives elite competitors. The possibility of seeing these championship rivals working together rather than against each other would provide compelling entertainment for racing enthusiasts.

Such partnerships also reflect the evolving nature of modern motorsport, where drivers increasingly pursue opportunities across multiple categories while maintaining their primary competitive commitments.
