Anthony Joshua confirms Davison return and advice from Peter Fury
Anthony Joshua has confirmed that he is back working with Ben Davison and has been taking advice from Peter Fury, the uncle and former trainer of Tyson Fury. The disclosure came during Wednesday's media activities in London, where Joshua and his rival appeared together to launch their December 11 fight in Cardiff.
Watch the highlights:
The Ring reported that Peter Fury will not be part of Joshua's team, distinguishing their conversations from a formal coaching appointment. Joshua said their contact developed through heavyweight Matty Harris, who is trained by Peter, and that he had last spoken to Peter about a month earlier. He said Peter was willing to help.
Joshua described the advice as focusing on his preparation, approach and areas for improvement. He said his interest in Davison and Peter was not simply that both had worked with Tyson Fury, but that they could identify useful details. His account also stressed that he intended to make his own decisions while incorporating their input.
Davison has previously coached both heavyweights. Boxing News reported that he worked with Fury during his 2018-19 comeback and with Joshua from 2023 to 2024. Joshua subsequently worked with Oleksandr Usyk's coaching team, including for his July victory over Kristian Prenga. Wednesday's disclosure set out a further change to Joshua's training arrangements without establishing a formal team role for Peter.
The news conference itself was largely cordial, according to BBC Sport's report from the British Airways ARC. Fury praised Joshua's contribution to British boxing, while the pair exchanged jokes and discussed meeting for a drink after the contest. Their face-off passed without confrontation, following years of public rivalry and unsuccessful attempts to put the fight together.
Questions surrounding the promotion also featured at the launch. BBC Sport reported that Dana White did not attend after Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn had disputed his involvement. The broadcaster also said Murat Gassiev's team had lodged an objection to the proposed WBA title arrangement. The contest is scheduled for Principality Stadium, but that objection means the reported title stakes should not be treated as undisputed.
