Kumble Predicts Dhoni Will Hand Wicketkeeping Gloves to Samson as CSK Eyes Leadership Transition
Former India captain Anil Kumble believes Sanju Samson could take over MS Dhoni's wicketkeeping duties at Chennai Super Kings while providing crucial leadership experience for the franchise.

Anil Kumble has predicted that MS Dhoni may hand over Chennai Super Kings' wicketkeeping duties to new signing Sanju Samson, as the franchise navigates a crucial leadership transition following the keeper-batter's arrival from Rajasthan Royals after India's T20 World Cup triumph.

Samson's move to Chennai marks a significant shift for the accomplished wicketkeeper-batter who played a pivotal role in India's recent T20 World Cup victory. His arrival at CSK places him in a high-pressure environment with one of the IPL's most successful franchises while creating fascinating dynamics around leadership and keeping responsibilities.

Speaking on JioStar, former India captain Kumble emphasized that Samson's recruitment reflects broader generational changes occurring within Indian cricket. He highlighted how cricket leadership has evolved through different eras, positioning Samson as part of this ongoing transition.

"Icons from one generation to another, the baton has passed on in Indian cricket, from Sunil Gavaskar to Sachin, then to Virat, with MS Dhoni also part of that era," Kumble explained. "You had the likes of Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly before the shift to MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, who still carry that aura and continue to perform."

Kumble particularly praised Samson's timing in joining CSK, noting his exceptional form leading into the IPL season. "In that sense, Sanju coming in is a great move for CSK. The icing on the cake is his fantastic form leading into the IPL and winning the World Cup for India with three back-to-back knocks."

Beyond his on-field capabilities, Kumble identified several factors that make Samson an ideal fit for the Chennai-based franchise. His Kerala origins and ability to speak Tamil create natural connections with CSK's passionate supporter base, while his wicketkeeping skills offer direct comparison to Dhoni's traditional role.

"From a Chennai perspective, he fits their need, being Kerala-born, speaks Tamil, so there's a connect, a wicketkeeper-batter, so in a similar mould to MS, and his experience will be valuable for CSK," Kumble observed.

CSK has experienced frequent leadership changes in recent seasons, with Dhoni repeatedly stepping back into captaincy roles during injury setbacks or transitional phases. Current captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has faced challenges including injury concerns that have disrupted leadership continuity.

Kumble believes Samson's extensive captaincy experience with Rajasthan Royals positions him perfectly to provide leadership stability within CSK's structure. This background could prove crucial given the franchise's recent leadership uncertainties.

"I think that's the perfect role for Sanju, handling those responsibilities almost like a vice-captain. He has captained Rajasthan for a long period of time, so that leadership role comes naturally to him, and that's something CSK will be looking for," Kumble stated.

The former India coach specifically referenced recent leadership challenges that highlight the importance of having experienced backup options. "Last year, when Ruturaj was injured, MS had to take over, and previously, when Ravindra Jadeja was also captain, MS Dhoni came back in as captain midway through the season."

Perhaps most significantly, Kumble predicted that Dhoni may voluntarily relinquish wicketkeeping duties to facilitate Samson's integration and preparation for future leadership responsibilities. This transition would represent a major symbolic shift within the CSK setup.

"I wouldn't be surprised if MS Dhoni gives Sanju the keeping role at some point during the season," Kumble revealed. "He will be part of the leadership group, and in case if Ruturaj is unavailable due to injury or otherwise, Sanju would probably take over rather than MS."

This prediction suggests CSK may be strategically positioning Samson not just as a player addition but as a long-term leadership solution. His combination of international experience, regional connections, proven captaincy skills, and wicketkeeping abilities creates a unique profile within the franchise.

For Samson, joining CSK represents both tremendous opportunity and significant pressure. The franchise's championship expectations and passionate fanbase will demand immediate impact while he adjusts to conditions at Chepauk and integrates within an established team culture.

The upcoming IPL season will reveal whether Kumble's predictions prove accurate and whether Samson can successfully transition from leading Rajasthan Royals to potentially inheriting the wicketkeeping gloves and leadership responsibilities that have long defined Dhoni's legendary career at Chennai Super Kings.
