Andrew Balding extends trainers' championship lead with Newmarket and York wins
Andrew Balding strengthened his bid for a first Flat trainers' championship with wins at Newmarket and York. Never So Brave led home a stable one-two in the Challenge Stakes.

Andrew Balding increased his advantage over defending champion Aidan O'Brien in the Flat trainers' championship on Friday, with victories at Newmarket and York strengthening his pursuit of a first title. According to The Guardian's report from Newmarket, the day's results included a one-two for Balding in the Group Two Challenge Stakes, where Never So Brave beat stablemate Flora Of Bermuda.

Watch the highlights:

That Newmarket result brought in a combined £129,000 for the yard. It followed another valuable success less than half an hour earlier, when Nakila Sun led throughout to win the British EBF Final at York. The juvenile's victory was worth £51,000, giving Balding prize money from two meetings in quick succession as the championship contest continued.

The results extended a turnaround that has gathered pace since late summer. Balding had been about £700,000 behind O'Brien at the end of August, but subsequently reduced that deficit. He moved into first place for the first time last weekend, when Blue Bolt won the Group One Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket. Friday's double carried him further ahead rather than simply closing an existing gap.

There was another setback for O'Brien in Newmarket's Group One Fillies' Mile. His runner Haven was caught inside the final furlong by Musical Times, while Balding collected additional place money through Forbidden Fire in third and Scommessa Sicura in fifth. Musical Times, trained by Charlie Appleby, remained unbeaten after three starts, overcoming trouble finding a clear passage before William Buick brought her through to win.

Balding remained cautious about the title despite the improved position. Speaking after the Challenge Stakes, he told The Guardian he had spent the week at the sales and expected enthusiasm among his team at home. He indicated that he would only begin to get excited if his position remained as strong after Champions Day, rather than treating Friday's gains as decisive.

O'Brien still has more than a dozen entries for that Ascot meeting next weekend. His possible runners include Jan Brueghel, Constitution River and Gstaad, leaving substantial competition ahead for Balding. For now, the confirmed wins at York and Newmarket have added to the leader's recent momentum, with the championship still unresolved.
