League investigates Andover match abandoned with Paulsgrove trailing 8-0
The Hampshire Premier Football League is investigating after Paulsgrove were reduced to six players while trailing Andover Town 8-0. The outcome remains unresolved, with competing accounts of why the visitors could not continue.

The Hampshire Premier Football League is investigating the abandonment of Andover Town's match against Paulsgrove after the visitors were reduced to six players while trailing 8-0, BBC Sport reported on Monday. A league spokesperson said an inquiry was under way and declined to comment further before it had finished.

The Division One fixture took place at Portway Stadium on Saturday, 31 October. Andover's official match record lists a 7-0 half-time lead but records the result as abandoned, rather than a completed victory. The Football Association's Full-Time results service also shows the fixture as abandoned, leaving the score at the stoppage distinct from an officially recorded final result.

In a statement published by his club, Andover manager Robbie Skeates said Paulsgrove had finished the first half with 11 players but returned with only seven. He said his side scored soon after the restart. Skeates questioned the explanation for the missing players and alleged that the opposing manager then instructed players to go down to bring about an abandonment. That allegation remains his account, not an announced finding by the league.

BBC Sport reported that posts appearing to be from Paulsgrove's official X account maintained that the players were genuinely injured. One response said injured players could not be made to continue. The broadcaster said it had asked the league for the club's contact details, but that request was declined. No conclusion resolving those competing accounts was reported.

The minimum number of players is addressed by Law 3 of the International Football Association Board's rules. Subject to specified temporary-absence exceptions, a game cannot start or continue when either side has fewer than seven players. The law also makes forfeiture for a team responsible for an abandonment subject to the relevant competition regulations; it does not establish the outcome of this particular investigation.

Skeates said Andover would submit a report and expected to receive the points, while acknowledging uncertainty over the treatment of the scoreline and goals. He also apologised to spectators who had not seen a full match. For now, the league's investigation, rather than the manager's expectation, will determine how the abandoned fixture is resolved.
