Hunt Champions Academic Excellence After World Silver Medal Breakthrough
British sprinter Amy Hunt reflects on her viral BBC quote about being an academic badass and track goddess, as she mentors young athletes while pursuing World Indoor Championships glory.

British sprinting sensation Amy Hunt worried she might be censored by the BBC when adrenaline-fueled emotions led to her now-famous declaration, but six months later, the Cambridge graduate embraces how her spontaneous words have inspired countless young female athletes worldwide.

Following her stunning world 200m silver medal performance in Tokyo, Hunt proclaimed to television audiences everywhere that young girls could be both an academic badass and a track goddess. The 23-year-old University of Cambridge English Literature graduate now admits she immediately regretted the choice of language on live television.

As soon as I said it, I was like, oh my gosh, I am on the BBC. I was like, are they going to bleep that out? I feel so bad, Hunt confesses. The spontaneous quote emerged from pure adrenaline, with Hunt explaining that a Goddess t-shirt she owned flashed into her mind during the euphoric post-race interview.

While Hunt jokes that she can no longer wear the inspirational t-shirt because it feels too corny now, the impact of her words has created opportunities for meaningful mentorship that extends far beyond athletic achievement. Her daily routine now includes responding to messages from aspiring athletes seeking guidance on balancing academic pursuits with sporting excellence.

Theres so many girls that message me every single day. I reply to as many as I can, especially those trying to go through the Oxbridge system, Hunt explains. The overwhelming response demonstrates how rare it remains for athletes to successfully navigate elite education while pursuing world-class sporting careers.

Hunts influence has produced tangible results, with several young women crediting her guidance for helping them secure admission to Cambridge University. Some of these mentees have become close personal friends, creating a support network that bridges academic and athletic achievement.

Its lovely to see more girls be emboldened and empowered to do that. Its just having those conversations, or reaching out with a message saying you can do it. That goes a long way, she reflects on the mentoring relationships that have developed since her Tokyo breakthrough.

The sprinter path to world medal success was far from straightforward, spanning six years from her record-breaking junior performances to senior podium achievement. Her 22.42-second under-18 200m world record in 2019 announced her potential, but injuries including a ruptured quadriceps in 2022 disrupted her early senior career development.

Managing the demands of Cambridge University studies alongside professional athletics created additional complexity, with Hunt describing often frictional relationships between academic and sporting commitments. Her determination to excel in both areas, rather than choosing the easier path of focusing solely on athletics, reflects the principles she now advocates to her mentees.

I didnt want to take the easy way. Thats not me and that doesnt inform anything I do. I have to always try and be the best every single day, Hunt explains about her dual-track approach to education and sport.

Currently training under coach Marco Airale in Padova, northern Italy, Hunt has ambitious goals extending beyond the upcoming World Indoor Championships in Poland. Her 5-foot-10 frame presents challenges in the 60-meter sprint—her least favorite event due to difficulties getting out of blocks quickly—but she recognizes its importance for developing speed across longer distances.

Longer-term ambitions include becoming a 400m contender as part of a bold plan to win four Olympic medals in 2028, an achievement she believes would establish her as an icon. However, Hunt remains equally committed to expanding opportunities for future generations through initiatives similar to British rapper Stormzys scholarship program supporting black students at Cambridge.

Hunts commitment to opening doors for others reflects her belief that discussing academic achievement alongside athletic success normalizes dual excellence and encourages more women from sporting backgrounds to pursue higher education. Her message emphasizes building confidence through meaningful conversations and demonstrating that exceptional performance in multiple areas remains achievable.

As Hunt prepares for this weekends World Indoor Championships, her influence extends far beyond personal medal pursuits to encompass inspiring systemic change in how young athletes view the relationship between academic achievement and sporting excellence.
