Alyssa Thompson gives Chelsea derby victory over Arsenal at Stamford Bridge

Alyssa Thompson scored the decisive first-half goal as Chelsea beat Arsenal at Stamford Bridge in the Women's Super League on Sunday. According to The Guardian's match report, Chelsea withstood an assertive start from the visitors before taking the lead and protecting it to secure three points in the London derby.

The match also brought Katie McCabe up against Arsenal for the first time since her summer move to Chelsea, following 11 years with the north London club. Chelsea coach Sonia Bompastor was able to start both Keira Walsh and Lauren James, with 20-year-old Lexi Potter selected alongside Walsh in midfield. Melvine Malard was also fit enough to lead the attack.

Arsenal manager Renée Slegers made changes after the midweek victory over HB Køge, although Kyra Cooney-Cross and goalkeeper Anneke Borbe retained their places. The visitors applied pressure high up the pitch and controlled the opening exchanges. Lisa Baum, 19, offered a threat down the right as Arsenal looked to make their early possession count against the hosts.

That promising spell did not produce a breakthrough. The Guardian reported that Arsenal failed to put any of their eight shots on target during their period of control, while Kim Little and Mariona Caldentey both struck the woodwork. Chelsea then capitalised on a defensive opening: Malard pressured Steph Catley as Arsenal tried to play out, and Borbe saved Walsh's effort before Thompson finished the rebound.

The goal sent Chelsea into half-time ahead and changed the direction of the contest. After the interval, Malard twice sent attempts narrowly wide as the hosts sought another goal. Arsenal continued to find opportunities, but Chelsea's defence held firm and the visitors were unable to recover from conceding before the break. Thompson's finish remained the difference between the sides.

Slegers said afterwards that she was not worried, while acknowledging that confidence can vary over a season. In comments reported by The Guardian, she stressed the importance of reducing pressure and complexity for her players and maintaining belief in what they can contribute. Arsenal were left without a reward for their strong opening, while Chelsea converted their key first-half chance into a derby win.
