Alpine Confirms Franco Colapinto for 2027 Formula 1 Season

Alpine has re-signed Franco Colapinto for the 2027 Formula 1 season, keeping the Argentine alongside Pierre Gasly for another year. BBC Sport reported the announcement on Thursday, giving the team a settled driver pairing as it continues its effort to climb the championship order.

Colapinto, 23, has recorded the strongest result of his Formula 1 career during the current campaign, finishing sixth at the Canadian Grand Prix. He also placed seventh in Miami, two results Alpine executive director Flavio Briatore cited while explaining the decision to retain him.

Briatore said Colapinto had developed significantly during the season and that his performances in Miami and Montreal confirmed the driver belonged in Formula 1 and at Alpine. He also stressed that confirming the lineup was only one part of the team's work, with designing and building a faster car remaining its main priority.

Colapinto said he feels happy and settled with Alpine and pointed to the team's progress compared with last season. He is due to continue with Gasly, the French driver who has delivered Alpine's best result of 2026 with a podium finish in Monaco. That result remains subject to a challenge from McLaren over the removal of two five-second penalties issued to Gasly for pit-lane speeding. BBC Sport reported that an appeal hearing took place Tuesday, with a verdict expected within a couple of weeks.

Alpine finished last in the 2025 constructors' standings but sits sixth after 12 races this season. According to the BBC report, its increased competitiveness followed two major strategic changes: the team curtailed development of its 2025 car to concentrate on the chassis for the new engine regulations, while parent company Renault ended its Formula 1 engine programme after 2025. Alpine now uses Mercedes customer engines.

Colapinto first raced in Formula 1 with Williams for part of the 2024 season after the team changed its lineup. Alpine signed him as a reserve driver for 2025, and he moved into a race seat when Jack Doohan was demoted after the opening six rounds. The new agreement extends that relationship into 2027 and removes one driver decision from Alpine's planning as it focuses on sustaining its technical progress.
