Alonso Hints at Formula 1 Future Beyond 2026 After Strong Start to Season
Fernando Alonso has cast doubt over suggestions he may retire from Formula 1 after the 2026 season, hinting that he could continue his illustrious career beyond the new regulatory cycle currently being introduced to the sport.
The two-time world champion, who celebrated his 43rd birthday earlier this season, has enjoyed a strong start to the 2026 campaign with Aston Martin, demonstrating the speed and consistency that has characterised his remarkable career spanning more than two decades.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, Alonso addressed questions about his future plans with characteristic candour: "I don't feel it's time yet. People have been asking me about retirement since I was 40, but the hunger is still there. The new cars for 2026 have been impressive to drive, and I feel I can still compete at the highest level."
Alonso added that the evolution of Formula 1's technical regulations had renewed his passion for the sport: "The sport keeps changing, and I keep adapting. There are many things still to achieve, and as long as I'm enjoying myself and the results are there, I don't see why I should stop."
Aston Martin team principal praised Alonso's continued commitment: "Fernando has been exceptional this season. His experience and work ethic are invaluable to the team, and we're delighted that he appears committed to continuing this partnership."
Alonso's comments will be welcomed by fans who have witnessed his remarkable longevity in the sport, with the Spanish driver having competed in over 380 Grand Prix races since his debut in 2001.
