Allison takes five as Worcestershire bowl Derbyshire out for 88 at New Road

Worcestershire ended an opening day dominated by bowlers with a 131-run lead over Derbyshire after Ben Allison's 5-22 helped dismiss the visitors for 88 at New Road. Twenty wickets fell in the County Championship Division Two match, with Worcestershire reaching 5-0 in their second innings, according to the ECB Reporters' Network report published by BBC Sport.

The position represented a sharp reversal after Derbyshire had bowled the hosts out for 214. Abbas led the visitors' attack with 5-63, his first five-wicket haul of the season, while Luis Reece contributed 3-34. Worcestershire had reached lunch at 104-3, but lost four wickets for 35 runs as Derbyshire took control during the first hour of the afternoon session.

Dan Lategan's early 26 was ended by Abbas, who also removed Rehaan Edavalath for 11. Jake Libby and Adam Hose then steadied the innings before Hose fell lbw to Amit Basra for 27. Libby made 33 before becoming another Abbas victim, while Reece dismissed Brett D'Oliveira and Matthew Waite during the middle-order slide. Henry Cullen was trapped lbw by Abbas for 15.

Worcestershire's lower order supplied runs that became increasingly valuable as the day progressed. Tom Taylor finished unbeaten on 39, and number 11 Fateh Singh added 25 from 38 balls. Abbas completed his five-wicket return by dismissing Ben Gibbon, but the home side still managed to pass 200 before Martin Andersson brought the innings to an end just before tea.

Derbyshire's reply lasted only one session. Taylor struck early to remove Yousaf bin Naeem, with Allison taking the slip catch, before Allison dismissed Harry Came for 11. Matthew Montgomery was caught behind and Andersson fell lbw during Allison's opening spell. Gibbon also removed Reece as Derbyshire slipped to 47-5. Wayne Madsen made 40, but his resistance could not prevent a total well short of Worcestershire's. Taylor finished with 3-27 alongside Allison's five wickets.

With a first-innings advantage of 126 secured, Worcestershire sent Allison and Singh out as nightwatchmen for the final three overs. Allison survived a dropped slip chance off Abbas in the first over, and the pair reached stumps without losing a wicket. Both teams had collected three points, but Worcestershire held the lead with all ten second-innings wickets remaining.
