Mac Allister Says Liverpool Have Not Offered New Contract

Alexis Mac Allister says Liverpool have not offered him a new contract, leaving the Argentina midfielder disappointed despite his stated commitment to the club. BBC Sport reported that the 27-year-old discussed his position before Liverpool’s Champions League match against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday. He has two years remaining on the five-year agreement he signed when he moved from Brighton in June 2023.

Mac Allister said he had been informed that Liverpool were not in a position to make an offer. He described himself as “very, very sad” about that decision while stressing that his effort for the club had not changed. His comments followed new agreements for fellow midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch, whose extensions he said they deserved.

The midfielder also said he had not spoken directly with Liverpool about the choice not to extend his terms. He acknowledged having options to leave during the summer but said he believed he was at the right club and would continue to give his full commitment. Mac Allister added that he loves the club, its supporters and the city, and told fans they did not need to worry about his effort while he remains at Liverpool.

BBC Sport noted that Mac Allister has been linked with Manchester City, but the player did not announce plans for a move. Instead, he said there was still time for his contract situation to change and that his immediate responsibility was to show the level he can produce. His existing deal means the discussion concerns an extension rather than an imminent expiry.

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola, appointed during the summer after Arne Slot was dismissed, said contract circumstances differ across the squad. Iraola said the important point was that Mac Allister wanted to remain at Liverpool. Although the pair have worked together only briefly, the manager described him as an important player whom he rates highly and said there was ample time for further contract talks.

Mac Allister joined Liverpool after his part in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup victory and has since helped the club win the Premier League. He referred to both the title success and the difficult periods experienced with the team when explaining his attachment to Liverpool. For now, no extension has been announced, and both the player and manager left open the possibility of future discussions.
