Alexandre Pato-Backed Group Clears Northampton Investment Approvals
A consortium that includes former Brazil, AC Milan and Chelsea forward Alexandre Pato has received regulatory approval for a proposed investment in Northampton Town. BBC Sport reported that the League Two club said both the Independent Football Regulator and the English Football League had approved the proposed shareholding acquisition, removing a significant hurdle before the transaction can be completed.
The investment group is Sports Alpha Capital. Pato is identified by SAC as one of its investors, alongside Gemcorp Capital, a London-based independent investment management firm. Northampton have not disclosed the size of the proposed stake, so the extent of the consortium's eventual ownership and its precise financial commitment remain unknown.
Northampton first disclosed talks with what it described as a well-funded investment group in April, beginning months of speculation about the club's future structure. SAC had also held discussions over a possible takeover of Colchester United earlier in 2026, but withdrew from that process after initial talks.
Chairman Kelvin Thomas said the Northampton proposal had undergone detailed scrutiny covering the ownership structure, financial sustainability, and the suitability and financial standing of those involved. According to the club, some members of the investor group have already visited Northampton and attended matches. Thomas said the group combines football, corporate and financial experience, with significant Brazilian representation.
The approval comes after a difficult period on and off the pitch for Northampton. The Cobblers were relegated after finishing bottom of League One last season and have not won so far in the 2026-27 League Two campaign. In April, the club announced a pre-tax loss of just under £3 million, while Thomas previously said the proposed investment would leave Northampton debt-free.
Northampton appointed Chris Hogg as manager in May and added 13 players during the summer transfer window, including striker Matty Warhurst from Manchester City. The regulatory decisions mark progress rather than final completion: the club said the remaining documentation must still be finished, with full details of the investment, its structure and the principal investors to be announced once the deal is completed.
