Alex Scott withdraws from England squad with thigh injury and faces weeks out
Alex Scott has withdrawn from England's squad for Tuesday's Nations League match against the Czech Republic after suffering a thigh injury. BBC Sport reports that the Bournemouth midfielder, 23, is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks with a quadriceps problem, leaving his club without him as a busy period of fixtures approaches.
Watch the highlights:
The setback follows Scott's first England start in Saturday's 7-0 victory over Croatia. According to the BBC, he had felt the problem before the game but played 70 minutes alongside Elliot Anderson in central midfield before coming off. His senior international debut had come four days earlier, in England's 2-0 win against the Czech Republic in Prague.
England coach Thomas Tuchel praised Scott after the Croatia match, highlighting his composure in possession, decision-making and work without the ball. Tuchel also singled out the mobility and variety he brought to midfield. Scott will now miss the return meeting with the Czech Republic at Wembley, while Arsenal defender Ezri Konsa has also withdrawn through injury and will return to his club for treatment.
For Bournemouth, the reported recovery window coincides with a schedule of nine matches between 10 October and 8 November. In addition to their weekend Premier League games, they have Wednesday or Thursday fixtures in four successive weeks. That run includes Europa League meetings with Sturm Graz, AC Milan and Sparta Prague, plus a Carabao Cup fourth-round tie against Aston Villa.
Marco Rose's team are 17th in the Premier League after taking three draws and two defeats from their opening five matches. They resume league action away to Chelsea on Saturday, before games against Sunderland, Manchester United, Leeds and Ipswich ahead of the November international break. Scott's expected absence therefore comes with Bournemouth still seeking their first league victory of the campaign.
Bournemouth have had better results in cup competition, beating Lincoln in the EFL Cup and winning 2-1 away to Real Sociedad on their European debut. Scott joins Eli Junior Kroupi on the injury list; the French forward remains unavailable with a foot problem sustained in pre-season. The BBC's six-to-eight-week estimate for Scott is an expected recovery period, not a confirmed return date.
