Alex Lozowski describes difficult Saracens exit after decade at club
Alex Lozowski has spoken about the disappointment of his final season at Saracens, describing the end of his decade with the club as difficult to understand after his opportunities dwindled. BBC Sport reported that the 33-year-old England centre, now with Sale, felt neither he nor his former team had achieved the ending they wanted. Saracens finished fifth, outside the play-off places.
Watch the highlights:
Lozowski made just two Prem appearances for Saracens last season. His only playing time after the end of February was a ten-minute appearance from the bench in the Champions Cup, according to the BBC. For a player who had accumulated 198 appearances for the club, that limited involvement left him wishing he could have contributed to the pursuit of a top-four finish.
His reduced role followed a 2024-25 campaign in which his performances earned selection for England squads during both the autumn internationals and the Six Nations. Saracens instead chose Olly Hartley and Nick Tomkins in midfield for the closing stretch of Lozowski’s final season. He said he disagreed with decisions over his involvement, while acknowledging that the club had its own reasons for making them.
Saracens won five consecutive matches during that run-in and entered the last round of the regular season still in contention for a semi-final place. An away defeat at Exeter ended that challenge. Lozowski said the outcome was disappointing for the team as well as personally frustrating: the club missed its target, while he had been unable to play the part he wanted in the attempt to reach it.
Looking back, Lozowski said the experience hurt at the time but now felt more distant. His sporting background also includes a youth trial at Arsenal and a spell in Chelsea’s academy before he was released and concentrated on rugby. His account of leaving Saracens centred on the difficulty of accepting selection decisions and a farewell that fell short of his hopes.
Lozowski said Sale’s desire to recruit him and their belief that he could contribute had meant a great deal. He acknowledged that showing his value to his former club would provide motivation, alongside helping his new team. After a final Saracens campaign marked by limited involvement, his stated priority is to deliver the contribution Sale brought him in to make.
