Alex Lozowski reveals frustration over Saracens exit after limited final season
Alex Lozowski has spoken of his disappointment at how his ten-year association with Saracens ended, after a final season in which he made only two Premiership appearances. The 33-year-old Sale Sharks centre described the departure as sad and difficult to understand in comments reported by BBC Sport on Friday.
Watch the highlights:
According to the BBC, Lozowski's only playing time after the end of February was a ten-minute substitute appearance in the Champions Cup. Saracens preferred Olly Hartley and Nick Tompkins in midfield during the run-in, while Lozowski was left reflecting on a club career that stopped at 198 appearances rather than reaching the 200 mark.
Saracens finished fifth after five consecutive victories had brought them close to a play-off place, before a final-round defeat at Exeter ended that bid. Lozowski said he had wanted to help the side reach the top four and felt the ending had left neither him nor the club satisfied. He acknowledged that selection decisions remained the club's to make, despite his disagreement.
The move to Sale had been announced in February, when the Sharks confirmed a two-year contract beginning with the 2026-27 season. Their announcement recorded that Lozowski had joined Saracens from Wasps in 2016 and contributed to three Premiership titles and two Champions Cup triumphs. Sale recruited him as an experienced back capable of playing centre or fly-half.
At the time of the signing, Sale director of rugby Alex Sanderson highlighted that positional range, describing Lozowski as someone who could direct play at fly-half or contribute in either centre position. Sanderson also pointed to his experience of winning trophies and the value of his leadership to younger players. The move reunited Lozowski with a coach he already knew from Saracens.
Lozowski's explanation of joining Sale centred on wanting a new challenge without giving up the pursuit of silverware. In the club's announcement, he said he admired the team's style and already knew George Ford and the Curry brothers through England camps. His latest comments to the BBC reinforced his determination to repay Sale's confidence by contributing to his new side.
