Alex Lozowski reflects on painful Saracens ending after Sale move
Alex Lozowski has described the closing months of his Saracens career as a painful disappointment after his playing opportunities sharply diminished. BBC Sport reported that the Sale Sharks centre felt bewildered by his marginal role during his final season at the club.
Watch the highlights:
The 33-year-old made just two Premiership appearances for Saracens last season. According to the BBC, his only action after the end of February was a 10-minute appearance from the bench in the Champions Cup. He left with 198 appearances for the London side.
Saracens preferred Olly Hartley and Nick Tomkins in midfield during the run-in and finished fifth. Lozowski said he had wanted the opportunity to contribute to the chase for a top-four finish, while acknowledging that selection decisions remained the club's responsibility.
Sale announced his recruitment in February on a two-year contract beginning with the 2026-27 season. In that announcement, the club highlighted a career at Saracens that started with his arrival from Wasps in 2016 and included three Premiership titles and two Champions Cup successes. His experience of winning trophies was among the qualities Sale identified when bringing him in.
Director of rugby Alex Sanderson also emphasised the range of roles Lozowski could perform. Sale's announcement described him as an option at fly-half and in both centre positions, with Sanderson pointing to his ability to direct play as well as operate in midfield. The coach also highlighted his leadership and potential influence on younger players.
For Lozowski, the move offered a new challenge with familiar connections. Speaking when the deal was announced, he said he knew George Ford and the Curry brothers from England camps and had previously worked with Sanderson at Saracens. He cited his friendship with the coach and Sale's ambition to win trophies as important parts of the move.
In his latest comments reported by the BBC, Lozowski said Sale's desire to recruit him had mattered personally. His focus now is on delivering the contribution his new club sought.
