Alex Albon Signs One-Year Williams Extension for 2027
Alex Albon will race for Williams in the 2027 Formula 1 season after signing a one-year contract extension, the team has confirmed. BBC Sport reports that the 30-year-old Britain-born Thai driver has committed for another campaign after considering his future during Williams’ difficult current season.
Watch the highlights:
Albon joined Williams in 2022 and has become the longest-serving driver in the team’s history. His Formula 1 career began with Toro Rosso in 2019. The new agreement gives Williams continuity with a driver who has been central to its rebuilding effort under team principal James Vowles.
The extension follows a sharp change in the team’s results. Williams delivered a surprise fifth-place finish in the constructors’ championship in 2025, but it has fallen to ninth after 11 races this season. Racing is scheduled to resume this weekend after Formula 1’s summer break.
Albon acknowledged the difficult year while emphasizing his belief in the wider progress made by Williams. He said one tough season did not represent the full story of the team’s transformation and added that he remained motivated to continue building with the factory and supporters. His stated focus is helping Williams move back up the grid.
Vowles has led the team since the start of 2023 and had targeted a significant improvement alongside this season’s broad regulation changes. That step has not materialized in the results so far. Vowles said Albon had been a leader of the transformation project from its beginning and described the renewed agreement as evidence of their shared belief in Williams’ direction.
BBC Sport’s analysis noted that Albon did not have an available seat among the top four teams, leaving potential alternatives elsewhere in Formula 1’s midfield. By agreeing a one-year contract, he has chosen to continue with Williams while retaining flexibility beyond 2027. The immediate task for both driver and team is to translate their longer-term changes into improved championship performance when the season resumes.
