Aitchison takes nine wickets as Derbyshire dent Kent's promotion bid

Derbyshire beat Kent by 181 runs at Derby on Friday, leaving the visitors third in County Championship Division Two with two matches remaining. The Guardian's county cricket coverage confirmed Kent's second innings ended at 252, after their lower order had prolonged the contest into its closing stages.

Ben Aitchison led the victory with five for 44, taking his match figures to nine for 102. According to the ECB Reporters' Network report published by BBC Sport, he claimed the first five wickets on the final morning, with England opener Zak Crawley the first batter dismissed.

Kent nevertheless assembled two substantial partnerships in their attempt to save the match. Chris Benjamin scored 32 from 115 balls and Ekansh Singh made 59 from 86, the pair adding 91 for the sixth wicket across 29 overs. Their stand gave the visitors a foothold after Aitchison's early breakthroughs.

Grant Stewart and Bertie Foreman then added 74 while facing 169 deliveries between them. Stewart reached 65 before Martin Andersson trapped him lbw. Foreman occupied the crease for 148 balls for his 38, but Shoaib Bashir eventually dismissed him lbw as Derbyshire worked through the remaining resistance.

Brett Randell completed the win by having Hasan Mahmud caught behind, finishing with three for 39. BBC Sport's report recorded 21 points for Derbyshire and three for Kent, whose defeat was only their second of the Championship season. The attempted recovery had not produced the draw they needed.

The Guardian's final scores showed Derbyshire made 300 and 352 for eight declared, while Kent managed 219 before their second-innings rearguard. Its updated table placed Northamptonshire second on 175 points and Kent third on 173. Durham were confirmed as champions after beating Middlesex by 93 runs, securing promotion with two rounds still to play.

Derbyshire sit fifth on 135 points, 40 behind Northamptonshire, and visit the second-placed side in the next round. The Guardian listed that fixture at Wantage Road among matches starting on September 15, when Kent host Lancashire at Canterbury. The narrow gap between second and third leaves the promotion contest unresolved.
