Agha century sets up Pakistan’s 37-run ODI win over Sri Lanka
Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by 37 runs in their one-day international at Rawalpindi on Sunday, with Salman Ali Agha's century providing the foundation for a total of 305. Sri Lanka were dismissed for 268 in 48.1 overs, according to BBC Sport's scorecard, despite half-centuries from Pavan Rathnayake and Janith Liyanage.
Watch the highlights:
Sri Lanka chose to field and Dilshan Madushanka removed both Pakistan openers, leaving the hosts 32 for two. Babar Azam made 45 from 57 deliveries and Saad Baig contributed 39 from 40, but both fell to Eshan Malinga. Those dismissals left Pakistan 118 for four in the 22nd over, with a substantial rebuilding job still required.
Agha answered with 107 from 90 balls, hitting 10 fours and a six. He and Hasan Nawaz added 97 for the fifth wicket before Nawaz departed for 37. Arafat Minhas supplied another 18, while Shaheen Shah Afridi finished unbeaten on 13. Pakistan were eventually bowled out in 49.5 overs, with Agha the only batter on either side to reach three figures.
Malinga finished with Sri Lanka's best bowling figures, taking four for 46 from 9.5 overs. Asitha Fernando claimed three for 59, including the wickets of Nawaz, Minhas and Agha, while Madushanka's two early breakthroughs came in a return of two for 67. Sri Lanka therefore needed 306 to win after dismissing Pakistan with one ball of the innings remaining.
The chase also suffered early setbacks. Kamindu Mendis scored 44, but Sri Lanka slipped to 91 for four before Rathnayake and Liyanage put on 119. Rathnayake struck 79 from 74 balls, including six fours and two sixes, before Faheem Ashraf dismissed him at 210 for five. Liyanage continued to 60, while Dasun Shanaka contributed 28 from 18 deliveries to keep the chase moving.
Pakistan then took the last five wickets for 15 runs, turning 253 for five into 268 all out. Afridi led their bowling returns with three for 55; Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf and Faheem took two wickets apiece. Rauf completed the victory by bowling Asitha Fernando, ending Sri Lanka's innings with 11 deliveries left and securing Pakistan's defence of their total.
