Dmitry Bivol Scores Unanimous Decision Victory Over Saul Alvarez in Light Heavyweight Rematch at MGM Grand
The Russian champion successfully defends his WBA title for the second time against Canelo, winning all three scorecards in a dominant performance.

Dmitry Bivol delivered a masterclass in boxing Friday night at MGM Grand Garden Arena, defeating Saul "Canelo" Alvarez by unanimous decision (118-110, 117-111, 116-112) to retain his WBA light heavyweight championship in their highly anticipated rematch. The 33-year-old Russian champion controlled the fight from start to finish, using his superior reach, movement, and ring IQ to frustrate the Mexican superstar while landing clean combinations that gradually broke down Canelo's aggressive style.

The victory represents Bivol's 23rd consecutive win and his most convincing performance against elite competition, silencing critics who suggested his 2022 victory over Canelo was a fluke. The champion looked even more polished in the rematch, implementing a tactical game plan that neutralized Canelo's power while consistently finding openings for his own precise combinations.

Bivol established his dominance early by utilizing his four-inch reach advantage to keep Canelo at the end of his jab while moving laterally to avoid the Mexican fighter's signature body shots and uppercuts. The Russian's footwork was exceptional throughout the contest, as he constantly changed angles and made Canelo miss with his most dangerous weapons while countering with sharp straight lefts and rights.

Canelo appeared increasingly frustrated as the fight progressed, unable to solve Bivol's defensive puzzle despite applying consistent pressure and attempting to work his way inside. The 36-year-old Mexican icon had his best moments in rounds four and seven, briefly stunning Bivol with a left hook and following up with sustained pressure, but couldn't maintain the intensity needed to trouble the champion over 12 rounds.

"I proved tonight that the first fight wasn't lucky - I'm simply the better fighter at this weight class," Bivol said during his post-fight interview, showing respect for Canelo while making it clear he had expected this outcome. "Canelo is a great champion at super middleweight, but light heavyweight is my division. I've been preparing for this rematch for four years, and I felt even more confident tonight than in our first fight."

The defeat represents a significant setback for Canelo, who had hoped to avenge his 2022 loss and add another weight class to his championship collection. The Mexican superstar acknowledged Bivol's superior performance while hinting that he may return to super middleweight where he has been dominant throughout his career.

Bivol's victory sets up potential unification fights against other light heavyweight champions, with WBC titleholder Artur Beterbiev being the most logical and lucrative opponent. The Russian-born, Canadian-based Beterbiev represents the only remaining undefeated champion in the division, setting up what could be an explosive all-Russian unification bout.

The fight generated over 1.2 million pay-per-view buys and $75 million in revenue, making it one of 2026's biggest boxing events despite the one-sided nature of the contest. Bivol's dominant performance also establishes him as arguably the best light heavyweight in the world, cementing his legacy as one of the division's all-time great champions.
